Introduction

Hello! My name is Alex McGrath and I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) located in San Diego, California. I provide both in-person and telehealth visits for clients located in San Diego and across California. I have been in practice since 2018, having clinical experience with integrated-behavioral health in a family medicine setting and group private practice setting. I now own my own practice, Grounded & Connected Counseling (website link below). I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, perfectionism, self-doubt, relationship challenges, major life transitions, or attempting to break patterns of family dysfunction. Those who appear to have it all together on the outside but are quietly struggling with a harsh inner critic, feeling like they are on autopilot, or are noticing unhelpful patterns and dynamics in their relationships. I also work with couples who are seeking to improve communication and conflict resolution, break patterns of generational family dysfunction, or are experiencing major life transitions (parenting, grief/loss, career changes, caring for aging parents). I tailor my approach to each unique individual or couple, drawing from evidenced-based techniques and modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman Method (levels 1 & 2 trained) as well as utilizing a foundation based in Attachment Theory, mindfulness and self-compassion. I operate from a non-judgmental, anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ affirming lens. I don't have any ideas or opinions on how you should live your life. I am here to help you examine what may or may not be working for you. I strive to maintain cultural competency in my work and to be open to hearing about and understanding how your culture and the identities you hold impact your life. My goal is to create a relaxed environment so you can feel safe enough to show up as your authentic self. So, I make it a point to show up as my full human self, not as a "blank slate therapist." My style is warm, caring and candid, while being direct and challenging you when necessary.
