Introduction

Most people don't come to therapy for a diagnosis. They come because something that matters isn't working, and what they've tried hasn't fixed it. Usually it sounds something like: I don't like how I feel or how I act, and it's affecting the people I love most. I don't think people are broken. I think they carry protective patterns that helped them at one point and aren't serving them anymore. Those patterns show up in their marriages, at their jobs, in their faith, in how they move through a day. The good news is that those patterns can be understood, adjusted, and if necessary rebuilt. My work starts with helping you see what's actually happening. Then we build the tools to change it. I've been a marriage and family therapist for more than twenty-five years. Before opening this practice I spent two decades on the faculty at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where I directed the marriage and family therapy program. I'm also an Air National Guard lieutenant colonel and wing chaplain. I grew up poor in a small Montana town and lost my father at fourteen; my mother raised me from there. That start shaped how I listen. The part that matters most: I've been married more than twenty-five years, I'm the father of five, and grandfather to four.
