Introduction

It’s like you’ve been holding your breath for years, bracing for the moment everything caves in and falls apart. You know your life has become unmanageable, but you also feel like If you don’t hold up the frame, it all falls apart. You’re the one who notices the shift in the room before anyone speaks, you smooth things over, fix what’s breaking, and carry what no one else will, often before you’ve even asked yourself what YOU want or how you feel. There is a low hum of vigilance that is persistent and never fully settles. Saying no feels dangerous. Disappointing someone feels unbearable. When you finally put yourself first, the guilt and anxiety can stay in your body for days. Somewhere along the way your worth got woven into how much you give or produce, and your own needs, your wellbeing, and your authenticity became unknown to you. There’s a pressure you’ve been living under day after day that has left you drained, anxious, and worn down to your last thread. Pretending has become second nature, but it’s getting harder and harder to pretend you don’t feel lost, overwhelmed and alone. Growing up, you didn’t have the option to fall apart. Somewhere along the way, you learned you were safest when you were needed, or when you needed nothing at all. That wisdom carried you through. It kept you loved, and it kept the peace. In your best attempts to cope, you disconnected from your needs and the core of who you are. Not because you wanted to, but because you had to…to survive This has driven you to succeed but also driven you away from your true self. You’ve always felt like it was safer to do and be what others wanted but now? You’re not so sure. Today you long to know who you really are, to define your own preferences, values, desires, and direction. You want to say NO without long explanations, apologies, or days of guilt and anxiety afterward. You are tired of feeling responsible for other people’s moods, choices, and consequences. You want to feel safe enough that you don’t need to please, control, or stay on guard. You want to stop staying in harmful relationships out of fear of being alone. You need your energy and joy back, to recover from burnout and to stop running on resentment or martyrdom. You long to rest, play, and enjoy things without guilt and deeply desire to feel calm in your body instead of always being on alert. DOES SOME OF THIS SOUND LIKE YOU…… + YOUR TRAUMATIC PAST IS DICTATING THE PRESENT Although you have survived, you’ve lived in a state of tension, anxiety, and fear that has lingered long after the trauma occurred. You have a hard time realizing how courageous you are because you had no other choice but to find ways to move forward and function despite being in a state of distress. You’ve struggled to feel safe enough, secure enough, and free enough to show up authentically in your life and in relationships in the ways you most desire. You’d give anything to fully experience joy, connection, safety, and trust, but you are constantly sacrificing yourself and your needs in fear that something terribly wrong will happen. Therapy with me is where you can finally exhale, let your body learn that the danger has passed, and slowly reclaim the safety, joy, and connection you’ve always deserved. + YOU GREW UP WITH A NARCISSISTIC OR AN EMOTIONALLY IMMATURE PARENT You grew up as the steady one, the easy one, the one who read the room before speaking a word, and you’ve never quite stopped. That skill protected you. It also taught your body that rest is risky, your needs are too much and boundaries are dangerous. In your upbringing you were trained to over function, overdeliver, and override your own needs, while pretending you’re fine. If you had the courage to speak up, they called you dramatic or too sensitive. Instead of listening, they made you feel guilty, ashamed, and even more confused. You felt invisible, like you didn’t matter. You’re still questioning who to trust and struggling to trust yourself. Therapy gives you a space where you can untangle the voices you were raised with from your own, rebuild trust in what you know and feel, and reclaim the self you had to hide to stay safe. + YOU ARE IN A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP YOU KNOW IS TOXIC BUT FEELS HARD TO LEAVE You might not call it “toxic,” but lately you’ve been wondering whether things are as okay as you keep telling yourself. You’ve been told that no one else would put up with you or ever truly love you, and a part of you has slowly started to believe it. The same disagreements keep coming back, going around in circles without resolution, until you begin to wonder whether you’re the problem after all. And still, the thought of leaving someone you love feels impossible. Together, we’ll gently untangle these mixed-up feelings so you can see what’s really happening, recognize the choices in front of you, and begin reclaiming your sense of self. + YOU ARE IN A HIGH STAKES PROFESSION & WORN OUT BY WHAT IT COSTS For the founder, executive, entrepreneur, physician, and professional who holds everything together. You lead under pressure, make high-stakes decisions, and carry the weight when others can’t. Somewhere along the way, your system learned to push through fatigue, set feelings aside, and stay focused no matter what was happening around you. That wasn’t a failing. It was a wise adaptation, and it has helped you build something remarkable. But a body that’s always braced will eventually start asking to be heard. It may show up as irritability, anxiety, panic, or a heaviness you can’t shake. It may look like strain in your closest relationships because you never get to switch off, a slow fading of the purpose that once lit you up or coping habits that numb more than they nourish. You may feel alone with all of it, as if you can’t show any crack, and as if no one could truly understand the weight of your days. Here’s the truth your nervous system may be longing to hear: even the strongest, most capable people need support, and you most of all. Together we will make space for the parts of you that have been holding everything together, help your body learn it’s safe to set the weight down, and reconnect you with the steady, whole Self underneath the role. Then you can lead, love, and live from a place of ease instead of endless effort. Feel Alive Again, Not Just Functional Whatever you’re going through, you don’t have to hide anymore. I SEE YOU. YOU ARE CAPABLE OF CHANGE & WORTHY OF THE THINGS YOU WANT OUT OF LIFE. Your Return to Yourself Requires a Therapist Who Gets It If you've found your way here, some part of you is already reaching for something deeper and more expansive. A part of you already knows that pushing harder and suppressing more isn't the answer, but you fear what will happen if you make a change. Maybe the days feel daunting and heavier than they should. You're holding it all together on the outside while something inside is begging for a moment to set the weight down so you can just be. In your best attempts to cope, you may have disconnected from your needs and from the core of who you are. Not because you wanted to, but because you had to, to survive. Trauma can come from many sources, including emotional neglect, toxic relationships, demanding high-stakes careers, and moral injuries. Your experiences may have taught you to ignore your instincts, leaving you unsure whether you can trust yourself. At times, you may feel detached and disconnected from others. Our experiences can deprive us of some of our most basic needs, such as connection, playfulness, safety, and trust. You survived, but you've lived in a state of tension, anxiety, and fear that lingered long after what you went through was over. It's hard for you to see how courageous you are, because you had no choice but to find ways to move forward and function while in distress. You've struggled to feel safe enough, secure enough, and free enough to show up authentically in your life and in your relationships in the ways you most want. You'd give anything to fully experience joy, connection, safety, and trust, but you keep sacrificing yourself and your needs for fear that something terrible will happen. You might even tell yourself that what you're feeling means something is wrong with you. You want to express your needs without fear of judgment, rejection, or abandonment. You want to fully embody and express your authentic self without feeling shame when you take a step toward being seen, known, and vulnerable, but something inside holds you back. You've Been Holding It All Together. Who's Holding Space for You? You've done everything you were supposed to do. You've been kind, generous, and patient. You've carried the household, the schedules, and the emotional temperature of every room you walk into. You've tried not to be "too much," not to be selfish, not to make a fuss. Somewhere along the way, you believed all that effort would pay off. And yet here you are, still giving, while the people around you keep expecting more. Your Emotions Have Been Trying to Tell You Something. Let's Listen. Most of us were never taught to have a healthy relationship with our emotions, especially our anger, and this is even more true for women. We learned to smooth it over, push it down, or turn it inward. But suppressed feelings don't disappear. They build up. Over the years, they can show up as burnout, resentment, anxiety, disconnection in our relationships, and real strain on the body. In our work together, we won't try to "manage" your emotions or push them away. We'll get curious about them. What have they been protecting? Which needs have gone unmet? What has your inner wisdom been saying all along that you haven't had room to hear? Using a depth-oriented, body-aware approach, I'll help you: Recognize how anger and other emotions show up for you, whether that's quiet peacekeeping, a slow simmer, or sudden eruptions Understand the conditioning behind your patterns Calm your nervous system so you can respond instead of react Turn the energy of your emotions into clarity, confidence, and action Here, you can bring all of yourself. Imagine Feeling Whole Again The first step is recognizing that you are not broken, you are not alone, and your responses are natural. Trauma symptoms can be understood as survival mechanisms. They are often the body's and mind's way of coping with extreme stress or danger, staying alert, and protecting you from possible threats. Hypervigilance helps you spot danger quickly, which is a crucial survival skill in threatening situations. Feeling detached from reality, having trouble feeling emotions, or feeling numb can make it possible to get through situations that would otherwise be unbearable. Intense emotional responses can be the body's way of processing and reacting to trauma. Difficulty regulating these emotions may come from the need to respond quickly to danger. I believe that underneath all the heartache, distress, and anxiety you've endured, there is a wise and centered you, one that radiates calm and wisdom. Your purest form of Self already exists. All this time it has stayed intact, but it has been buried by your experiences and by the many ways you've had to protect yourself. Imagine saying what you mean without rehearsing it first. Imagine setting a boundary without spending the rest of the day feeling anxious or guilty. Imagine your relationships becoming more honest and more balanced, because you're no longer quietly absorbing everything. When you stop suppressing your feelings, you may notice: Clarity about what you want and what you'll no longer tolerate Confidence to speak up at home, at work, and in your relationships Calm in a nervous system that's no longer stuck on high alert Energy that used to go into holding it all in Self-respect that doesn't depend on being "good enough" for anyone else You don't have to choose between being kind and being powerful. You can be both. Breathe. We're in This Together. Therapy is a courageous decision. It is a commitment to a journey of integrated change and restoration. I special treatment. My goal is to guide and support you as you face your fears, to offer a space where you can bring all of who you are and all you've been through, and to support you in living authentically. Building a trusting relationship with a therapist creates a sense of safety, breaks down shame, and provides both comfort and practical help. When this happens, our physiology settles into its natural healing capacity. From there, real well-being can blossom, and we can face the hard things. Therapy is a pathway to overcome, learn, rise, and expand. With gentleness, direction, and compassionate support, it becomes much easier to see that we are moving beyond our old ways of being. Imagine finding compassion and a new understanding of every part of who you are. Whatever your story, I am passionate about helping you unlock your full potential. I offer a sacred space where you can move past your shame and rebuild trust in your own capacity to heal. You can tap back into your innate goodness and wisdom. It would be an honor to guide and support you on your recovery journey. Hi, I'm Cristina Smugala Licensed Professional Counselor, EMDR Certified Clinician, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner I work with women who are emotionally overwhelmed and high-functioning: the people others rely on, who look like they've got it handled but privately feel exhausted, disconnected, or unable to slow down. People come to me for trauma, anxiety, burnout, or relationship patterns that keep repeating. Underneath, the work is usually the same. We look at how your past shaped the way you survive now, and we gently build a life where you no longer have to earn the right to exist. I believe therapy should feel like a wellspring: an exploration grounded in real depth, but never cold or clinical. My role isn't to fix you. You're not a problem to be solved. My role is to be the steady guide beside you as you find your way home to yourself. I know this work from the inside out. For years, I was the "nice one": the good daughter, the dependable friend, the generous partner who never seemed to need anything, and the high-achieving overfunctioner. I didn't realize how disconnected I was from my own emotions and needs until my body started speaking up for me. Learning to build a healthy relationship with my own emotions changed everything. I became more confident, more decisive, more assertive, and healthier. Sitting across from women, I've seen the same pattern again and again: once women reclaim their misunderstood emotions, they reclaim their power. I'm still a kind, generous person. I'm also a force to be reckoned with. We contain multitudes, and healing happens when we stop leaving parts of ourselves behind. The Way You Operate Now Isn't a Personality Trait. It's a Strategy. And you didn't choose it as an adult. You built it as a child, in a home where someone else's emotions took up all the room. You became an expert at reading the temperature of a room before you even walked in. You learned early that your job was to be easy: no needs, no mess, no extra weight. Your parent may have been competent at everything except feelings, so love came as logistics and criticism, and rarely as comfort. You were the one who held it all together. You were the peacekeeper, translating the conflict, keeping the younger kids steady, or carrying a secret no child should ever have been asked to hold. For some, nothing easy to name happened at all. You were fed, clothed, educated, and praised for your accomplishments. But no one ever asked how you were. And when you were upset, it became a problem to be corrected rather than a feeling to be understood. So you did what intelligent children do. You worked out the terms and adapted. Be excellent. Be useful. Need nothing. Then you'll be safe. You held up your end of that deal for years. It got you everything on your résumé. It also cost you the ability to rest, to be known, and to trust that you'd still matter if you ever stopped producing. Those responses were never flaws. They were your body's way of protecting you. The vigilance, the numbness, the bracing: they made sense. They kept you moving through what you had to move through. You are a person who adapted. You're Not Just Holding It Together. You're Excelling in a World That Demands Everything from You. I know the world you move through, because I understand what it asks of high-achieving people like you. The morning that starts before your feet touch the floor, with the mental list of responsibilities already running. I understand the hidden cost of being the person who holds everything together. The constant low hum of keep going, don't drop anything, don't let them see you falter. The tightness that gathers in your stomach when the day asks for more than you have left. You've spent years excelling, performing, and staying in control while the world spun faster around you, and you've proven again and again how strong you are. But strength was never meant to feel like holding your breath. What you deserve now is different. Not another way to push harder, but the chance to bring the intensity down, to steady yourself, and to root so deeply that you can finally thrive instead of simply endure. Trauma Therapy in St. Louis I See You, and I'm Here to Help Imagine a space where you don't have to explain, perform, or apologize for how you feel. Where your story is met with warmth instead of judgment, and where the tender, guarded parts of you are treated as sacred rather than broken. Healing doesn't mean becoming someone new. It means coming home to the Self that's been waiting underneath. Your Path to Lasting Change I use an integrative approach to restore a sense of calm, centered connection between the brain and body. I believe that with support and guided practices, we can land more deeply in the safety of an embodied, regulated Self. We Begin by Finding Your Steady Ground True healing needs a solid foundation. We'll explore how "survival mode" shows up in your body right now, identifying your unique triggers and the protective patterns you've relied on to get by. We'll map them with curiosity, not judgment. My priority is making sure you have the practical support you need to regulate your nervous system. I start from the understanding that you need to feel more settled and present in your own body from the very beginning. This helps you move from reactive to steady and grounded. You'll leave our early sessions with a tangible shift, feeling more in control of your inner world. Together, we'll rebuild the connection between you and the signals you learned to override, so you can respond to your emotions, experiences, and needs before they become a crisis or a symptom. Next, We Unpack the Roots Stability gives us the capacity to go deeper. From steady ground, we can begin to look at what lies beneath the surface and explore where your patterns came from. Real relief doesn't come from managing symptoms more efficiently. It comes from finally understanding what's underneath them. We'll gently untangle the roots of perfectionism, overfunctioning, and self-suppression. We'll shift your experience from simply coping with the day to fundamentally changing how you relate to your history and to yourself, so you can break the cycle of self-abandonment. You Come Home to Yourself Beneath the exhaustion and the vigilance, there is a Self in you that is steady, wise, and whole. Much of this work is clearing the way back to it. The hope here isn't a more efficient way to cope. It's a life where you no longer need the coping at all. Therapy is not just about the absence of pain. It is about the presence of possibility. As you take in these new ways of being, you'll find you can lead and love without constantly bracing for impact. You'll begin to trade the exhaustion of survival for the clarity of embodiment, and finally reclaim the power that has always been yours. This work is not about becoming less capable. Your competence is real, and it's yours. The goal is for it to stop being the only way you're allowed to exist. You've spent your whole life being the one who holds it together: for a parent who couldn't, for a family that needed you to, for a profession that rewarded it. Where do you get to be held? Using trauma-focused approaches such as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Internal Family Systems, and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, I offer therapy that doesn't just feel good in the room. It creates lasting change. Together, we'll explore the nervous system patterns that have been holding you back and turn that understanding into real, workable strategies for moving through your full and demanding life with more clarity and calm. Caring for your inner world was never only about easing stress or tending old wounds. When you feel grounded, steady, and sure of yourself, that steadiness moves through everything you do: your work, your relationships, and the future you're still building. My hope is that you can keep showing up as the remarkable person you already are, while finally leaving room for joy, rest, and a life that feels more spacious and authentic. You've already done the impossible. Let me help you make your life more sustainable and far more rewarding. Where Heart Guides Healing Everything I do is shaped by a few core values that guide how I show up in the room with you. I believe healing is an active, honest process. I'll meet you with both gentleness and truth, honoring how far you've come while making room for who you're still becoming. My caseload is small by design. In a season when everyone needs a piece of you, you deserve one hour that's completely yours, with a therapist who's spacious, present, and fully invested. Real presence. Lasting change. You've already proven your resilience a thousand times over. My approach helps you carry that strength differently, with less bracing and more ease. There's no version of you that needs editing before you walk in. This is a space for the real you, met with genuine presence and no pretense. Every person, story, and identity is welcome here. You deserve care that sees and respects all of who you are. You deserve both real clinical skill and real warmth. I bring rigorous, evidence-based care and a compassionate, human presence, because you should never have to choose between the two. When You're Ready, I'm Here Reach out for a free 20-minute consultation. No pressure, no commitment, just a first step toward feeling more like yourself. Whether you're the one everyone leans on, the person who holds it all together, or someone who's finally ready to stop running on empty, you deserve a space where you don't have to perform. The patterns you're dealing with now often go back further than the present moment. These include overfunctioning, traumatic stress, trouble slowing down, and the sense that your worth depends on how much you carry. Often the very traits that made you successful (the drive, the self-reliance, the instinct to hold everything together) took root long before your career did. Many of the people I work with grew up being the responsible one, reading the room, or meeting everyone's needs but their own. That built real strengths. It also built patterns that can quietly wear you down: overfunctioning, trouble resting, relationships where you give far more than you receive, and a nervous system that never fully powers off. Getting started shouldn't come with confusion or fine print. This is an investment in your peace, not one more thing to figure out. You don't have to keep holding it together alone. MODALITIES Internal Family Systems (IFS), Therapists often use guided imagery to help clients picture the internal landscape of their mind. This technique makes the therapy vivid and experiential, so abstract ideas feel concrete and relatable. IFS emphasizes the mind-body connection and encourages clients to tune into their physical sensations and emotions as they explore their internal landscape. This somatic awareness deepens the experience and grounds the work in the present moment. EMDR Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) uses bilateral stimulation to process and integrate traumatic memories. EMDR therapy follows an eight-phase process: history taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and reevaluation. This process helps reprocess traumatic memories and integrate them into your psyche. Somatic Experiencing Somatic therapies: Somatic Experiencing addresses the physical effects of trauma through body-based techniques. Trauma can cut you off from bodily sensations as a way to cope with overwhelming stress. Somatic therapies help people reconnect with their bodies so they can sense and understand their physical responses to trauma. Trauma can trap energy in the body, which can lead to physical and psychological symptoms. Somatic techniques help release this trapped energy, often through small, controlled movements or guided exercises. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Trauma often involves intense emotional numbing and avoidance of trauma-related thoughts and feelings. Ketamine can help break through these barriers by reducing activity in the brain's default mode network (DMN), which is linked to self-referential thinking and rumination. Lower DMN activity lets patients reach and process deeply buried emotions and memories, which makes for a fuller, more healing therapeutic experience. *For those who meet eligibility criteria. Emotion Regulation Techniques Mindfulness and relaxation techniques to strengthen emotional regulation and stress management.
