Hello! I'm Donny Hathaway, and I'm happy you're here. If you're so inclined, I'd love to tell you a little about myself and how Helping Hathaway came to be. How I Got Here Like many people working in the substance use field, my journey began with my own experience in treatment. At the time, I was working as a business analyst and feeling unfulfilled professionally. One day, a treatment counselor casually asked me, "Have you ever thought about becoming an addiction counselor?" I don't think that counselor had any idea how much that simple question would change my life. I enrolled at Century College and became a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) in 2023. Initially, I thought my educational journey was complete. As it turns out, I was wrong! Working with clients sparked a growing interest in mental health and the many factors that influence substance use. I went on to earn my Master of Social Work from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota in 2026 and became a Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW). My Experience Throughout my career, I've had the opportunity to work with adults in residential and outpatient addiction treatment, community-based services, and correctional settings. I've worked with people at many different points in their lives. Some are actively seeking treatment, some are uncertain whether they need help, and others are completing an assessment because a court, probation officer, or another professional has requested one. I understand that not everyone comes to an assessment under the same circumstances, and that's okay. Why Helping Hathaway? I started Helping Hathaway LLC because I believe access to substance use assessments should be straightforward, affordable, and respectful. I also recognize that completing an assessment can feel intimidating, especially when it's something you're required to do rather than something you've chosen for yourself. My goal is to make the experience as comfortable and collaborative as possible. My Approach Helping Hathaway is rooted in harm reduction and is proudly LGBTQIA+ affirming. I believe people deserve to be treated with dignity, regardless of their substance use history, legal circumstances, or where they are in their recovery journey. During our time together, I'll take the time to understand your circumstances, listen to your concerns, and discuss recommendations and available options. An assessment isn't about telling you who you are. It's about understanding where you are today and helping identify what, if any, services might be beneficial. And if treatment isn't indicated, that's important to recognize, too. Thank you for considering Helping Hathaway. I look forward to meeting you! Donny Hathaway
