Introduction

Dorothy works with preteens, teens, college students, and women who often carry a lot internally—whether that’s high expectations, deep thinking, or navigating complex life transitions. Many of her clients feel overwhelmed by anxiety, caught in cycles of overthinking, experiencing depression, or walking through difficult seasons such as grief or spiritual questions, and are ready for a space where they can slow down, process, and feel supported. Her approach is warm, insightful, and practical. She helps clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while also creating space to explore deeper questions of purpose and faith when desired. Whether you're a teen feeling pressure to perform, a college student trying to find your footing, or a woman navigating a new season of life, Dorothy provides a supportive space to process, heal, and grow. Dorothy integrates evidence-based approaches including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), person-centered therapy, and developmentally appropriate strategies for younger clients. Her goal is to help you move from feeling overwhelmed to feeling grounded, confident, and emotionally well. Dorothy McDermott, MS, LPC, NCC is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Alabama (#3559) and Georgia (#010741), and a National Certified Counselor. She earned her Master of Science in Counselor Education and Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Jacksonville State University. Dorothy is also a Certified Prepare/Enrich Facilitator, founder of A Fresh Start Counseling and The Well Life, and author of Get Well: A Fresh Perspective on Mental Wellness. She has been serving individuals and families since 2007. Originally from Jacksonville, Alabama, Dorothy is married with three children. She enjoys singing, reading, and traveling with her family. Ready to take the next step? Dorothy welcomes the opportunity to support you as you navigate this season and move toward clarity, peace, and lasting wellness.
