Hi, I’m Dr. Kimberly Smoots. My path into this work began in school psychology and race equity research, where I saw firsthand how our systems, family histories, and cultural backgrounds shape who we are and how we heal. Raised by an immigrant mother and a military father, I deeply value the rich, blended nature of our individual identities. As a bi-ethnic (Mexican and Black American) psychologist, I bring my authentic self into the room to offer warm, affirming, and empowering care for kids, adolescents, adults, and families, especially those navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and neurodiversity like ADHD, autism, and intellectual differences. Therapy with me isn't just sitting on a couch talking; it is an active, collaborative team effort. In our sessions, we will use real-world CBT tools, sensory exercises, interactive activities, and deep reflection to help you build practical solutions that actually work for your daily life. Your consent and comfort are always front and center. I create a safe, honest space where we can give each other real feedback, and where I will gently push and challenge you to reach your goals. I am also deeply committed to growing alongside my clients, which is why I am constantly sharpening my skills through advanced trauma certifications and specialized, neurodivergent-friendly tools. What Working Together Looks Like Across the Lifespan Because I view mental health through a developmental lens, I adapt our work to match your exact stage of life while keeping your unique background in mind: With Adults: We take a developmental, root-cause approach. We will connect how your past experiences, childhood environments, and intergenerational patterns show up in your current relationships, career, or stress levels. We will combine deep reflection with concrete CBT skills to help you heal past hurts and shift unhelpful patterns in real time. With Kids: We learn through play, movement, and sensory engagement. A session might involve art, interactive games, or sensory tools to build emotional vocabulary, practice calming strategies, and work through big feelings in a way that feels safe, natural, and engaging. With Teens: We focus on connection, identity, and practical skill-building. Sessions balance open conversation with interactive activities, like mapping out thinking patterns or trying out sensory tools, to help them navigate school, relationships, and neurodivergent experiences without feeling put on the spot. I believe in supporting the whole system. When appropriate and within the comfort of my clients, I invite parents or family members into sessions to align on strategies, improve communication, and ensure the tools we build together actually work in daily life. Come as you are, and I will meet you where you are.
