What makes a strong marriage? What ties and binds a family together? What makes a person infinitely resilient? I grew up in a large family with mental illness – my mother’s first husband had schizophrenia. At the age of 12, I witnessed two of my three older brothers experience their first psychotic breaks. We often visited them at a New Jersey state hospital, in an era when mental health hospitals were truly asylums. Think One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. And yet I remained unafraid. I was inspired. I wanted to learn about family dynamics and dysfunction, initially to understand mine. It has now been over 30 years that I have been a trained marriage and family therapist, with a focus on helping people find their purpose, passion and place in the world, as well as strengthening the bonds of family and love. My own childhood trauma allowed me a deep understanding of how trauma impacts our growth and shapes our lives. And after having spent a year in Greece volunteering with refugees who’d fled war and persecution in the Middle East, I have continued to discover a compassionate understanding of suffering, kindness and the human condition – and all of this experience combined has led me here today.
