Somatic is derived from the Greek word Soma, which means body. Somatic therapy is therapy focused on the body versus traditional talk therapy. Body-based therapy is effective because our mind is in constant communication with our body and therefore trauma and emotions often get stored and can get stuck in our bodies. As a yoga teacher, I can guide clients in therapeutic movement to help un-block this trauma and emotion. This can also be helpful for clients living with chronic illness or chronic pain and wanting to improve their mobility. What is EMDR? EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and it is one of the leading therapies for trauma reprocessing. When we go through something traumatic, a pathway is left behind that is deep and difficult for our brain to avoid, causing symptoms of PTSD. Exercising the brain through bilateral stimulation (using both sides of it) can help the brain to re-incorporate this pathway. When applied properly, EMDR can help make scary memories feel distant, as if a normal long-term memory, and no longer activating for the body. EMDR can be helpful for more than traumatic memories; including phobias, grief, substance use and more!
