My name is Harlan J Kroff and I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 17 years of experience. I earned a Masters in School and Community Counseling from Boston University (2007) and then a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Counseling/Psychology from Fitchburg State University (2010) as I worked my first clinical jobs. For the last 13 years I’ve worked as a Social Worker/Adjustment Counselor as part of a psychotherapeutic special education program at a public high school. Prior to that position I worked with adolescents and adults as an outpatient clinician at two large nonprofits, Northeast Behavioral Health (formerly Health and Education Services) and Community Healthlink (at the Lipton Center). While the primary focus of my work has been with individuals who presented with adjustment disorders, anxiety disorders, ADHD, mood disorders as well as school and age related issues, it has not been uncommon for my clients to additionally present with symptoms of PTSD as well substance use disorder. Every therapist has their own conceptualization of what counseling is and how it should be done. I’m no different. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to people and their stories, and, fundamentally, that’s what I believe is at the heart of successful counseling. It’s about connection and collaboration. It’s the process of building relationships, based in trust and mutual respect, and learning the story of how an individual got to the place they’re at. It’s about working together to better understand that story and how it impacts that person in the present as well as their choices in the future. Additional information: During my years as a mental health counselor, I’ve developed expertise in diagnostic and risk assessment, the development and implementation of collaborative, measurable treatment plans, and an understanding of local, State and school-based systems. I have provided both short and long term care. In terms of specific treatment, I have always stressed psycho-education as well as utilized techniques consistent with Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. While having received training in all these modalities, I’ve never followed any of them to absolute fidelity. Instead, I use the elements that would be most helpful for my client.
