Introduction

Everyone your age got instructions. Somebody bought a house. Somebody's engaged. Somebody finished the degree you started. And you say "not much, just working," because the real answer is you're not where you were supposed to be. If your family immigrated it's more complicated. They worked so you'd have it easier, and somewhere in there you became the proof that it worked. Nobody said that to you directly. You just knew it. So it's hard to bring up. Whatever you're dealing with, somebody in your family had it worse. I don't think you're being negative. I think you did the math. You tried, nothing moved, you stopped expecting it to.
