I understand how overwhelming it must feel for an adolescent or adult with developmental challenges to struggle with communication, social skills, and/or daily routines. I also understand the impact it can have on the caregiver and/or the overall family unit. I have worked for many years with developmentally delayed adolescents and adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Individualized treatment plans are essential when working with clients with developmental delays, as each client presents their own unique set of strengths and weakness in different areas of functioning. It is important to utilize evidenced based interventions, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) which incorporates behavioral incentives, positive reinforcement to strengthen skills, such as task initiation, emotional regulation, and organizational skills. These skills are reinforced when combined with visual aids, such as calendars, checklists, and color-coded systems to help with planning, task completion, and managing routines. It is vital that treatment providers work collaboratively with both clients and caregivers to not only provide effective therapeutic interventions; but also to provide psychoeducational support. The consistent use of ABA interventions can help to reduce anxiety and frustration; and consequently minimize the frequency of negative behavioral response styles; which can build the clients confidence and sense of independence. My role as a therapist is to help you and your loved one to achieve progress in a supportive environment. Together, we can build lasting skills, confidence when communicating, connectedness, and success in managing their activities of daily living. Let’s connect and take that first step toward positive collaboration.
