Hi, I am Joselyn! I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York State. I became a therapist because I want to help people reach their goals. I strive to be the person who: listens to understand, rather than to respond; cares about your concerns, instead of invalidating or dismissing; and pushes you to get out of your comfort zone. If you are struggling with transitions (divorce, career changes, identity, becoming a parent), grief/loss, trauma, low-self-esteem, anxiety, and or interpersonal/relationship conflicts; I have some tools and I would love to share them with you to give you more control in your life. I earned my bachelor's degree in Psychology at Utica College in 2017 and my master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling at St. John Fisher College in 2020. While earning my bachelor’s degree, I worked as a Shift Manager at McDonald’s. While earning my master’s degree I worked as a student advisor, helping students work towards graduation and plan effectively for their futures. I have experience working with individuals who experience chronic pain, depression, anxiety, trauma, grief/loss, explosive anger, and substance abuse. I enjoy utilizing Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) approaches. DBT focuses on 4 areas: mindfulness (being in the here and now), interpersonal effectiveness (healthy and effective interactions), distress tolerance (bearing painful events skillfully), and emotional regulation (managing our emotions). MI focuses on understanding what motivates us and using that to our benefit to elicit changes in our lives. I also use humor in sessions because I believe in allowing ourselves to laugh about the “good and not so good” parts of our lives in order to heal and grow. A little bit about me: Tacos are my favorite, I love dogs and I have two (Marshmallow and Cinnamon), and I only started drinking coffee in 2020.
