Hello, and welcome. I'm Karen Clifton, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and founder of Empowerment Integrative Wellness. My journey into psychiatry began long before earning my psychiatric nurse practitioner certification. Throughout my nursing career, I have had the privilege of serving individuals from all walks of life, including those facing mental health challenges, developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, chronic medical conditions, and complex life transitions. These experiences taught me that every person's story matters and that true healing begins when people feel seen, heard, understood, and valued. I believe mental health is rarely the result of a single factor. Our emotional well-being is deeply connected to many aspects of our lives, including physical health, sleep, nutrition, gut health, hormones, stress, relationships, movement, and life experiences. While medications can be an important part of treatment for some individuals, I believe the best outcomes occur when we take a comprehensive approach that seeks to understand and address the root causes contributing to symptoms. My practice combines evidence-based psychiatric care with an integrative perspective. I utilize traditional psychiatric assessment and medication management when appropriate while also exploring factors such as lifestyle, nutrition, hormonal influences, genetics, inflammation, and overall wellness. I offer pharmacogenetic (genetic) testing when clinically indicated and enjoy helping clients understand how their unique biology may influence treatment response. I have a special passion for working with individuals with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD across the lifespan. As both a provider and advocate, I understand the importance of recognizing each person's unique strengths while providing support for the challenges that may impact daily functioning, relationships, school, work, and overall quality of life. My goal is to help neurodivergent individuals and their families feel understood, empowered, and supported throughout their journey. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood concerns, life transitions, burnout, or simply feeling that something is "off," I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where we can work together to understand the bigger picture. I view the therapeutic relationship as a partnership, and I believe the most effective care happens when clients feel comfortable asking questions, sharing their concerns, and actively participating in their treatment plan. My mission is simple: to meet you where you are with compassion, connection, and care while helping you move toward greater wellness, resilience, and fulfillment. I look forward to being part of your journey.
