Introduction

Kate Junk, Ph.D., L.P. is a licensed psychologist and health service provider in the state of Iowa. She provides individual therapy, biofeedback training, and assessment to adolescents, adults, and older adults. She uses a multi-theoretical approach to address a wide range of client concerns including: stress, life transitions, anxiety, depression/mood problems, bipolar disorder, relationship issues, health/medical issues, grief and loss, and trauma. She also has experience in career counseling, including the use of vocational assessment tools. Her approach to therapy is collaborative and integrative. The base of her work with client’s is to develop a supportive, validating and caring therapeutic relationship, and to develop a clear understanding of each client’s unique identity and life experiences. Kate works collaboratively and flexibly with clients, striving to provide counseling that is tailored to what each individual needs. Kate feels she is best able to meet a client’s needs by drawing from multiple counseling theories, and she frequently draws from interpersonal, mindfulness, and CBT approaches. Kate has special interest and training in the use of biofeedback – a technique that measures the body’s physiological responses to stress and provides information that helps individuals learn how to reduce chronic stress and anxiety, increase emotional regulation, and improve general well-being. Kate earned a Doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology from Iowa State University in August 2012 and obtained licensure in psychology in 2013. She completed her doctoral internship at the APA accredited internship at Iowa State University Student Counseling Service, where she provided a number of services including individual and crisis counseling, group counseling, career counseling, outreach trainings, and provided supervision to doctoral-level practicum students. She then worked at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, IA, where she provided individual counseling, conducted neuropsychological assessments, led therapy groups, and participated on interdisciplinary treatment teams. Most recently, Kate worked at the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center providing individual therapy and conducting psychological assessments, and where she coordinated the Biofeedback program. In her personal life, Kate enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She has two young children who she loves to spend time with. In the quieter moments of life she enjoys reading, watching tv, gardening, and napping.
