I provide individual therapy sessions for clients age 12+ with neurodevelopmental disabilities (level 2 & 3 autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, down syndrome, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (as well as co-occurring diagnoses such as OCD, anxiety & PTSD). Key strategies I use in sessions are going slow, prioritizing safety, leading with curiosity, simplifying concepts, using clear literal language at a client’s level of understanding, allowing for extended processing times, focusing on behavioral actions, as well as involving caregivers to ensure skills learned in sessions are applied in everyday life. I also always start & end all sessions with grounding techniques to ensure emotional safety & help clients transition from our session back into their daily routine. My overall therapy style is an experiential body-centered approach rooted in mindfulness & somatic therapy to help clients identify emotions, build confidence, behavioral control/self-management, social skills, & emotional regulation (i.e. choosing calming non-aggressive responses).
