Mary Wilkie (she/they) is the owner and primary provider of services at Rooted Breath Counseling. Using EMDR, somatic, and eclectic techniques in an Adlerian approach to person-entered counseling, Mary focuses multicultural humility, intersectional experience, and expansive curiosity as a partner for their clients. Mary has clinical experience with DID/OSDD/systems and takes a non-behavioral approach to both parts work and exploration in psychoeducation and expansion of neurodivergent joy. With lived experience of domestic violence, housing instability, LGBTQIA2S+ life, and complex trauma, Mary meets each new client as an individual with their own uniquely intersectional experiences, challenges, and strengths. For over a decade she has worked to create safe, collaborative, intersectional opportunities for young people and adults to feel seen, valued, and connected. Mary has used her past platform as a community leader and theatre teacher to bring advocacy and mental health tools for LGBTQIA2S+ inclusion and cultural humility, appreciation, and youth advocacy social justice to spaces and places they wouldn’t normally reach but where families and youth already feel a sense of agency and belonging. As a counselor, they want to extend the scope of this connection to include connecting with clients to help each person reach outside their homes and immediate community to feel and create a true sense of shared belonging in the world. Moving alongside clients as the experts in their own lived experience, Mary supports clients in forging new paths for themselves. In this way, they hope to contribute positively in the field of clinical mental health to embrace and combine diverse perspectives on trauma informed care with creative practices of artistic expression.
