Life is difficult! Accepting that life is difficult opens the door to transcending the difficulties. Acceptance is neither a mere acknowledgment of the difficulties nor permission for their continuance. Acceptance is becoming responsible for our story without excuses or blame. Acceptance is the bridge to a deeper understanding of our experiences without remaining fused to difficult emotional patterns or distorted beliefs about our worth. My own experiences in life have taught me that the traumatic aspects of life can produce a level of psychic pain so powerful that it can block out any other experiences, but the pain. I utilize psychodynamic theory, with several cognitive approaches, to help my clients work through the trauma, defuse from the negative self-concept, and improve coping. Understanding the story without negative conclusions and distorted judgements leads to a life worth living. You have a story, but you are not the story.
