You're still showing up, making decisions, and taking care of what needs to be done, but your mind rarely gets to stand down: replaying conversations, anticipating problems, staying on guard, or pushing through exhaustion. I'm Nate Van Heuveln, a Licensed Professional Counselor and founder of Criterion Counseling, my independent practice in St. Cloud, Minnesota; I also provide counseling as a contracted clinician with Hudson Counseling Clinic. I work with adults facing anxiety, trauma and PTSD, social anxiety, and chronic stress or burnout, especially when patterns that once helped them cope, perform, or stay in control have started working against them. My background in clinical counseling and industrial-organizational psychology helps me look at both the psychological patterns and the real-world demands, roles, and expectations that can reinforce them. Talking things through matters sometimes, but I don't want therapy to become the same circular chat week after week. We'll identify what's keeping the problem going, define what we're working to change, and use targeted approaches such as CBT, exposure-based treatment, or CPT when appropriate. Then we put that work to the test in your everyday life, evaluate what's changing, and adjust our approach based on what's actually working. Sessions are active and time-conscious, with direct feedback, practical strategies, and attention to whether the changes are showing up in your life outside therapy.
