Introduction

Shauna Barnes is a master’s-level Clinical Mental Health Counseling intern at Southern Methodist University, where she is completing her graduate training with a trauma concentration. Shauna specializes in working with clients navigating life transitions, depression, anxiety, trauma, parenting challenges, and issues related to early motherhood and women’s mental health issues. Shauna’s counseling approach is grounded in humanistic and existential therapy. She believes all individuals have an inherent capacity for growth and meaning-making, and she works collaboratively to create a safe, nonjudgmental space where clients can explore their experiences, deepen self-understanding, and move toward a more authentic and fulfilling life. Shauna brings over 15 years of experience in the mental health field into her clinical work. Her career impact includes clinical depression research and community mental health education and advocacy, reaching tens of thousands of students, parents, and professionals across North Texas. In addition, Shauna is an experienced speaker who has presented to professional audiences on the adolescent brain and suicide prevention. Shauna holds bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and English Literature from the University of North Texas. Outside of the therapy room, she enjoys spending time with her husband and children, traveling, visiting art museums, reading, and discovering unique finds at estate sales.
