Introduction

Hi, my name is Shawnia Nguyen. I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and bilingual (conversational in Vietnamese). My journey has been deeply influenced by my own experiences as a first-generation Vietnamese American. I have had the privilege of working as a trainee with adults and couples from diverse backgrounds, including the AAPI, multicultural, and LGBTQIA+ communities. This role has allowed me to witness and address the unique challenges faced by individuals within these groups, and it has reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate, culturally sensitive care. Growing up, I observed firsthand the struggles faced by members of my community, including my own family, as they sought to overcome the stigmas surrounding mental illness. These experiences have profoundly shaped my understanding of the barriers to seeking help and the importance of creating a supportive, safe, and nonjudgmental space for those in need. My own journey has not been without its challenges; I have grappled with low self-esteem, guilt, shame, stress, anxiety, and depression, often feeling the weight of my parents' sacrifices in their hopes for a better life in the U.S. I realized how the pressures and expectations placed upon children of immigrants can create significant emotional and psychological burdens. In my practice, I am dedicated to taking a trauma-informed and strength-based approach. I strive to create an environment where individuals can explore their challenges, build resilience, and align with their core values. My goal is to help you address and reduce the stigmas associated with mental health, while supporting you in creating the life and relationships you aspire to have. Reaching out for therapy is a courageous and admirable step. It requires strength to confront personal struggles and to seek support, and I deeply respect the bravery it takes to embark on this journey. By choosing to engage in therapy, you are taking a powerful step toward positive change and self-discovery, and I am honored to be a part of that process with you. Together, we will work towards building a more fulfilling and balanced life, honoring your unique experiences and aspirations, and fostering a path toward healing and growth.
