Introduction

Hello, I'm Sonia Duque-Miyashita, a bilingual (English/Spanish) Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S™). With more than 21 years in the field, 18 as a Licensed Professional Counselor and 3 foundational years as a steadfast advocate for marginalized communities navigating substance abuse, trauma, and the complexities of the child welfare and criminal justice systems, I've had the privilege of walking alongside children, youth, families, and individual adults from all walks of life. My work has taken me through nonprofit agencies, private practice, CPS, criminal courthouse, equine therapy, school settings, domestic violence and human trafficking organizations. This is my calling, and I'd be honored to support yours. My educational background includes a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Arlington and an M.A. in Counseling from Argosy University/Dallas. Over the past 15 years, I have furthered my expertise through specialty training in Trauma-Informed Care, multicultural and marginalized populations, immigrants and refugees, Animal Assisted Therapy, Play Therapy, and LPC supervision from the University of North Texas. My passion is instilling hope and healing in children, adolescents, and families who have experienced trauma related to domestic violence, sexual assault, identity issues, life transitions, substance abuse, self-harm, anxiety/depression, grief/loss, interpersonal struggles, school stressors, and parenting challenges. I utilize an Integrative-Eclectic approach, embracing Trauma-Informed Care, CBT and DBT techniques, Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), Expressive Arts and Family Systems approach. At the heart of it all is a humanistic foundation, one of genuineness, empathy, and unconditional positive regard. I have found deep wisdom through personal adversity, having cared for loved ones with cancer and cognitive impairment, and raised my children in public schools where I volunteered for many years. Volunteering remains my inner compass, grounding me in purpose and selfless service. At Sonia's Place-Children and Family Counseling, I believe in something beautifully simple: the transformative power of connection and empathy. Every individual and family who walks through my door is embraced with warmth, understanding, and empathy. The journey toward emotional health is not always easy, it is filled with tender moments and difficult ones, but you were never meant to walk it alone. With patience, compassion, and a nurturing heart, I create a space where wisdom is gained, light emerges, and a new chapter begins, one where you and your loved ones can grow, breathe, and thrive together.
