Introduction

Steven Sohnle, Psy.D., ABPP, A-CBT, is a licensed (35SI00394000) and board-certified psychologist in Somerville, New Jersey. Specializing in evidence-based therapy for the stresses of health anxiety (excessive worry about possible illness) and diagnosed chronic conditions (e.g., GI diseases, chronic fatigue), Dr. Sohnle helps clients to live fulfilling lives amidst these challenges. Whether you found Dr. Sohnle through your medical provider, a friend, or an online or AI search, he would be happy to discuss your concerns and how he can help. ABOUT A licensed psychologist since 2001 and board-certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology since 2003, Dr. Sohnle has extensive experience across a wide range of mental health settings, including inpatient, intensive outpatient (IOP), and outpatient programs. He has conducted assessments, therapy, and crisis interventions with patients from their late teens through their nineties, individually and in couples, groups, and families, and thus, there is little he hasn't seen. PATIENT FOCUS Dr. Sohnle works with patients who have chronic medical conditions or persistent anxiety about possibly getting sick with a serious disease. He understands the frustrations that come with these conditions (pain, lack of understanding from others, frustration with the healthcare system, and endless disruptions to day-to-day and life plans). THERAPEUTIC STYLE Dr. Sohnle is experienced with and continues to learn the latest evidence-based treatments, but applies them in a highly personalized and compassionate way. He wants to know what you're going through before offering suggestions: "Seek first to understand, then to be understood." QUALIFICATIONS Dr. Sohnle is board-certified in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and currently serves as an examiner for board certification candidates. He is a diplomate of the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies and is listed on the National Register of Health Service Psychologists. As an educator of health and mental health professionals, he is on the clinical faculty at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He has provided clinical supervision and currently teaches graduate classes at the Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology. Dr. Sohnle provides behavioral health consultations and clinical supervision for the integrated care program at Rutgers Student Health. He has published research and presented symposia at national conferences, including the American Psychological Association's annual convention. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Dr. Sohnle holds a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He completed an internship in clinical psychology and a postdoctoral fellowship in geropsychology at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He has served in a number of leadership roles, including Principal Investigator/Administrator for the COPSA Institute for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Now Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences), and Director of Counseling and Psychiatric Services for Rutgers-New Brunswick. INSURANCE Services are eligible for out-of-network reimbursement through most major health plans. Please call or text 732-301-4102 with questions about fees and using your insurance. SCHEDULING Dr. Sohnle sees patients in person and via telemedicine (NJ only).
