Introduction

Suhadee “Su” Henriquez, LCSW Psychotherapist • Aviation Consultant • The Flying Psychotherapist IF THERE IS NO TIME AVAILABLE THAT WORKS FOR YOU, PLEASE SEND ME A MESSAGE. Suhadee “Su” Henriquez, LCSW, is a bilingual Latina psychotherapist, multi-state Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and aviation consultant with a professional background that uniquely bridges mental health, human behavior, and commercial aviation. Su is licensed to practice across New York, New Jersey, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Florida and maintains a private psychotherapy practice, The Butterfly Effect Psychotherapies, LCSW, PLLC, home of The Flying Psychotherapist. Before and alongside her career as a psychotherapist, Su spent more than 24 years as a commercial airline flight attendant, flying internationally and working with passengers, flight crews, and professionals from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Her combined experience in behavioral health and commercial aviation now informs her work as an aviation consultant, with particular interests in psychological safety, human behavior, communication, crew dynamics, organizational culture, leadership, and the human factors that influence safety and performance. Psychotherapy Su specializes in the treatment of fear of flying, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, trauma-related difficulties, and personality disorders, including Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Her clinical experience also includes working with individuals experiencing relationship difficulties, perfectionism, procrastination, chronic illness and pain, disordered eating, substance-use concerns, grief and end-of-life issues, and suicidal and non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors. Su has extensive experience working with people from multicultural backgrounds and with LGBTQ+ individuals and families. Treatment is individualized to the person rather than limited to a single therapeutic approach, integrating evidence-based interventions with each client's needs, goals, culture, circumstances, and strengths. DBT, CBT & Evidence-Based Treatment Su received intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and was a founding clinician of the first Spanish-speaking DBT program in the United States at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Her training and clinical experience also include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP), exposure-based interventions, Family Connections, mindfulness-based approaches, and life-stage and skills-based interventions. Su has received direct training from Dr. Edna Foa, developer of Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, as well as training with Dr. Melanie Harned in the integration of DBT and trauma-focused treatment. Fear of Flying & Aviation Psychology Su's work with fear of flying brings together two professional worlds that are rarely found in the same clinician: extensive commercial aviation experience and specialized psychotherapy training. Rather than approaching flying anxiety solely from the perspective of a mental health clinician, Su understands the operational environment of commercial aviation, the passenger experience, flight crews, turbulence, aircraft sounds and sensations, and many of the situations that can activate anxiety before and during a flight. Her work helps individuals better understand both what is happening in the aviation environment and what is happening within their own nervous system. Aviation Consulting Su also brings her combined aviation and behavioral-health experience to consulting, education, and professional development. Areas of focus may include: Psychological safety • Human factors • Safety culture • Just Culture • Leadership • Communication • Crew and team dynamics • Stress and performance • Behavioral responses to risk • Mental health and aviation • Fear-of-flying education Her approach examines aviation not only as a technical system, but as a human system—one in which communication, leadership, organizational culture, decision-making, stress, and psychological safety can directly influence how people perform. A Multicultural Perspective Having spent decades working with people across countries, cultures, professions, and communities, Su brings a deeply multicultural perspective to both psychotherapy and aviation consulting. Whether working with an individual seeking psychotherapy, someone determined to fly despite intense anxiety, or an aviation organization examining the human side of safety and performance, her work is grounded in the same principle: Understand the person, understand the environment, and build the skills necessary to respond more effectively to both.
