Hello and welcome, my name is William Martineau but I go by Cory. I have been working in the mental health field for over 11 years different roles including in community-based services, at the Boise crisis center, as a counselor in community agencies, and for the last 3 years in my own private practice. I got my undergraduate degree in Psychology from University of Idaho in 2014 and my Masters in Clinical Counseling from Northwest Nazarene University in 2020. In my time in the mental health field, I have had experiences working with individuals from many different backgrounds and going through a variety of struggles. I believe counseling is about helping individuals develop insight and awareness into their struggles, while also teaching skills that will help in alleviating or reducing these challenges. I am not a guru or fortune teller that is going to be able to tell my clients what is the right or perfect answer to every problem, but will hopefully give them the knowledge and ability to help them move towards the life they are wanting for themselves. Issues I work primarily with adults with Trauma and PTSD from childhood, and have extensive training, supervision, and experience in this area. The modalities that I am trained in can help with being able to regulate intense emotions, process past traumatic experiences, and assist in being able to engage in meaningful experiences instead of avoiding them due to the symptoms many experiences with Trauma. Along with trauma work I also enjoy working with individuals struggling with codependency and binge/disordered eating behaviors, and these are actually two issues I see happen often among people who have been through trauma. I also work with individuals struggling with Depression, Anxiety, and ADHD. Modalities The main modality and where I conceptualize much of my work is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT is about being able to develop the willingness to accept difficult inner and outer world experiences that we as humans go through on daily basis. When I use the word acceptance it is not about wanting, liking, tolerating, or giving into our emotions or thoughts, but a willingness to have them while we commit to actions that are guided by our own personal values. ACT can work well with trauma as the opposite of acceptance is avoidance, and many people with trauma will understandably want to avoid the difficult emotions, thoughts, memories, and situations associated with the trauma they have been through. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing which has been show to help with processing past traumatic events that people have been through, and reduce the intensity of these memories. This is done through bi-lateral stimulation (BLS) typically moving the fingers in front of the eyes in a sweeping motion, but over the years they have developed many different ways to simulate the BLS. I am trained several other modalities including Internal Family Systems, Compassion Focused Therapy, Solutions Focused Therapy, and Polyvagal Theory. Many of the modalities I am trained in are Trauma-informed and help me understand treat the trauma people have experienced. Lastly Someone once asked what does being authentic mean? In Gabor Mate’s book The Myth of Normal he talks about people wanting to two things in life Attachment and Authenticity. Authenticity is about our likes, dislikes, wants, needs, emotions, and who we want to be at our core. However, for many people who have been through Trauma or difficult times they may have sacrificed their authentic selves to gain attachment with others, even if those others were their abusers. My approach to counseling is to give people the insight, knowledge, and skills to be their authentic selves. If you feel like we would be a good fit please feel free to email, call, or schedule an appointment above through the client portal. Take Care!
