Introduction

Hi, I’m Yoana Luna, a Licenses Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #160919), and I’m bilingual in Spanish and English. I work with children of all ages, adults, couples, and older adults, using a person-centered approach to therapy. With over 20 years of experience in various settings and with diverse populations, I have a deep understanding of issues like couple counseling, domestic violence, family conflict, grief and loss, and anxiety. I am passionate about working with couples, helping them navigate their challenges and strengthen their relationships. "As a Latina therapist, I recognize the need for the Latino community to have a space where they can connect with someone who speaks their native language and shares their experiences. Therapy for Latino clients happens through storytelling. As a therapist, I get the honor of being the holder of the client's stories, which fosters a therapeutic space where the client feels connected and finds belonging in the therapeutic environment. In therapy, we touch on various cultural values and beliefs, such as the use of dichos (proverbs) by elders to make sense of their experiences, el respeto (respect), La Familia (the family), and gender roles such as Machismo and Marianismo. I also provide a space for code-switching, speaking in Spanish and English (or what we call Spanglish). Using this therapeutic space to process the emotions tied to these stories allows clients to explore generational trauma and identify the resilience that has helped them push through difficult life experiences. It’s inspiring to see my community challenging these cultural beliefs to find healing. Seeking out therapy is not a traditional practice for Latinos because we are taught that family issues are resolved within the family unit, but more and more, I see my gente (people) seek out therapeutic support, and that makes me feel Orgullo for my people to challenge out cultural beliefs to find healing." "The power of storytelling is precisely this: to bridge the gaps where everything else has crumbled." - Paulo Coelho I also have specialized training and experience working with children, young adults, and women who have suffered domestic violence. My specialties include trauma-informed care, cognitive behavioral therapy, and couples therapy. LMFT #160919
